To reach its climate neutrality target by 2050, the EU must drastically reduce emissions and scale up carbon removals. As part of this strategy, the EU has developed the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Framework (CRCF) with the aim to create a trusted system for certifying high-quality carbon removals and to unlock new funding opportunities, especially through voluntary markets and public-private incentives.
Carbon farming, a key pillar of the CRCF, intends to generate qualitative certified removal credits and new income streams for farmers by increasing the amount of carbon stored in soils and vegetation through sustainable practices on the ground.
This interactive workshop aims to discuss how to finance the large-scale deployment of carbon farming in the EU. Through engaging presentations and discussions, participants will gain valuable insights on existing key national financing mechanisms, alongside innovative private initiatives (e.g., Livelihood Funds) that could shape a future purchasing programme* for carbon farming.
The sessions aims to answer the following key questions:
- What are the needs and motivations of buyers and investors, as well as the potential barriers and challenges to address?
- What are the key success factors that should be retained for the structuring of carbon farming financing?
- How to structure an effective purchasing programme* and what is the role of public and private investors?
*By purchasing programme, we mean financial model that would enable the purchasing of carbon credit.
